CNET.com (a division of CBS Interactive) has contributed greatly to helping people answer the question "What do I want?". Solr was originally developed by Yonik Seeley while at CNET Networks and is widely used within CNET to provide high relevancy search and faceted browsing capabilities. People interested in doing category counts and drilling down can see an effective implementation that deals with a very large number of filters. Two examples include:
- CNET Reviews provides users with the ability to browse CNET's catalog of tech products by category and filter the lists according to category-specific attributes, which are displayed along with counts of how many products they will get if they apply that filter. Multiple filters can be applied (in any order) to rapidly narrow down the list of products. CNET has several thousand unique categories, and each category can have as many as 1,000 unique queries.
- CNET Content Solutions provides a way to deliver the right information -- reviews, data sheets, manuals, and more -- to customers in a timely manner. DataSource converts non-standardized product information from multiple sources into consistent content for electronic product catalogs. There is detailed content on more than 3 million technology products in 15 languages. Customers include CDW, Computacenter, Dell, HP, Insight, Microsoft, OfficeMax, PC World Business, Tech Data and Yahoo.
