Lucid Imagination Announces Agenda for Apache Lucene EuroCon Barcelona 2011

Open source search community from across Europe and around the globe converges to leverage and advance the innovation agenda for faster, more effective search technology

Redwood City, Calif. – September 1, 2011 – Lucid Imagination, the commercial company for Apache Lucene and Apache Solr search technology, announced today that the full program and agenda has been posted for Apache Lucene Eurocon Barcelona 2011. With over 35 sessions spanning the breadth and depth of search innovation, this second annual European conference for the Lucene/Solr community has drawn presenters from both sides of the Atlantic united by a compelling vision: transforming the flood of structured and unstructured data into faster, more cost effective search applications that span sectors and industries.

The conference, scheduled for October 17-20 in Barcelona, also marks the 10th anniversary of the open-source release of Lucene's version 1.0, which became part of The Apache Software Foundation portfolio in the fall of 2001. Proceeds from the conference benefit The Apache Software Foundation.

QUOTES AND RESOURCES

"You'd think search is a limitless problem, but in fact it's the near-limitless innovative potential of a thriving open source community that brings people together to share how they are taking on every angle and every opportunity of making all this data useful," said Simon Willnauer, Chair of the Apache Lucene, PMC.  "Without question, the committers who are building the software used by Lucene/Solr application developers worldwide thrive on the challenge of showing their work to the broadest possible audience at Apache Lucene Eurocon. I never cease to be amazed by the things that people all over the world are doing to test, improve, and build on open source search." Willnauer is one of about a dozen Apache Lucene committers and PMC members attending the conference; he will speak about the future challenges and opportunities in Apache Lucene 4.0.

"Now that data has escaped the database, it's become increasingly obvious that open source search represents the best hope for broad-based innovation and adoption new, more cost-effective ways of turning that torrid data growth into value," said Peter Tait, Chief Marketing Officer at Lucid Imagination, which presents Apache Lucene Eurocon. "The big deal about big data is in making that data useful to as many people as possible. Apache Lucene Eurocon gives the people who build the applications to make that data useful direct exposure to those who build the search platform they run it on. The result is that the best ideas win – and open source ensures that any organization can tap into that innovation, frictionlessly."

In addition to the conference, two-day, accelerated training workshop intensives precede the October 17-18 conference, featuring introductory and intermediate classes in Solr application development, and trainings in Lucene development, big data/Hadoop, and LucidWorks Enterprise.
