it did seem rather bizarre that the book was released quite a while before the software (when you have a project that is ripe for it and you are itching to use the new features it seems to take longer!), however i can see the publisher's position too.

there was apparently an issue where it was wating for a new version of lucene at the time before it could be released (v. 2.9 i think). the online addendum isn't too lengthy either, so that's not too bad.

i also feel that faceting could/should have been it's own chapter too- perhaps in the next version.

overall i'd certainly recommend the book to anyone who needs to understand and use solr. it is very comprehensive and well-written, which is just as well seeing as, to my knowledge, it is the only book available! :)

Thanks for the very in depth review, and we'll be updating the addendum page based on some of your points. I'll admit I was on tenter hooks awaiting this review since you know the internals of Solr so well. We debated about waiting on 1.4 to go final before publishing, and finally decided to stop delaying and go ahead and publish! Hopefully there will be a second printing and we'll update the chapters.
